A 21-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being shot multiple times in Brampton on Wednesday night.

Peel Regional Police said officers were called to the area of Dixie Road and Lisa Street around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday to investigate the sound of gunshots.

When officers arrived, they found a young man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Peel Regional Police. He was taken to a local trauma centre, where he is now in non-life-threatening condition.

Major crimes unit leading investigation

Detectives with Peel Regional Police's major crimes division have taken charge of the case. As of Thursday morning, police said the scene had been cleared.

No suspect information has been released. Police have not said whether they are looking for one or more shooters, or what may have led to the gunfire.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

The intersection of Dixie Road and Lisa Street sits in a mixed residential and commercial area of east Brampton. Neighbors in the area would have seen a heavy police presence Wednesday night into Thursday morning before the scene was cleared.
