Library users at Aaniin and Markham Village branches will get new self-checkout kiosks as part of about $675,000 in automated equipment approved by Markham City Council, Markham Review reported.

The investment will also provide equipment to help library staff process returned materials, with an automated book-sorting system planned for each branch.

Both locations will receive four self-checkout kiosks. The machines are intended to make it easier for visitors to check out library items.

Behind the service desk, nine new staff RFID workstations will allow employees to check in several items at once. Five of those workstations are allocated to Aaniin Library, while Markham Village Library will receive four.

The two book-sorting systems are intended to help staff handle returned items more efficiently. Each library will receive one system.

Aaniin Library will also receive four RFID security gates to help protect library materials.
