Toronto's unbeaten streak is over. AFC Toronto fell 2-0 to Montreal Roses FC at BMO Field on Sunday afternoon, dropping the club to 7-4-5 on the season while it holds third place in the Northern Super League table with 25 points.
Toronto created a string of dangerous chances in the first half but could not break through. The opening goal came ten minutes into the second half, when Montreal's M. Alidou converted a penalty to make it 1-0 in the 55th minute.
Disallowed goal, late insurance marker
Defender Shelina Zadorsky, a London, Ont., product, thought she had pulled Toronto level with a header, but the goal was ruled offside. Montreal's Elyse Bennett then sealed the result in the 74th minute, making it 2-0 against the run of chances Toronto had built.
"Fortunately, I didn't think the performance was bad," head coach Marko Milanović said in a match report on AFC Toronto's website. "I thought we created a lot, should have scored. … We have to put the ball in the net and that's on us, that's something that is not luck. We have to do a better job in front of goal."
Milanović also addressed the slow start, saying Toronto looked off its game for the opening ten minutes before taking control for most of the first half, and he felt both Montreal goals came against the run of play.
Ontario-heavy lineup shows out at BMO Field
Sunday marked the first BMO Field starts for AFC Toronto for both Zadorsky and goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo of Welland, Ont. Forward Lena Silano came off the bench for her first appearance at the venue.
The match also carried a distinctly local flavour for Greater Toronto Area fans. The starting eleven included Sarah Rollins and Olivia Chisholm of Toronto, Victoria Pickett of Barrie, Nikayla Small of Pickering and Sarah Stratigakis of Woodbridge.
Striker Kaylee Hunter fired five shots on target against Montreal and now leads the Northern Super League with 30 shots on target this season. Small, Toronto's captain, recorded five tackles on the day and tops the league with 77 tackles overall.
"We're not giving up"
Despite Sunday's result, Milanović said the club remains in the title race, eight points back with nine games to play. "We think we're very much in the race to win the league, even though we're eight points behind. There's a lot of soccer to be played and we're not giving up," he told the club.
Zadorsky said playing her first match at BMO Field for the club was a thrill, crediting the group and the fans for the welcome. "I think we have a lot of potential and we won't give up," she said.
Toronto outshot Montreal 20-9 overall, with nine shots on goal and six corner kicks, but finished on the wrong end of the result. The season series between the two clubs now stands at 1-1-2 in Montreal's favour of results earned.
AFC Toronto travels east next weekend to face Halifax Tides FC at Wanderers Grounds on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 12 p.m. ET, a match available on TSN in Canada and ESPN+ in the United States.
