A 23-year-old Ajax man wanted after two Durham police officers were struck by an SUV has been arrested, Durham Regional Police said. One officer suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other sustained minor injuries.

Police said Yaseen Waggan turned himself in on October 1, 2026, and was arrested without incident. The charges stem from an encounter during an investigation on September 22.

The incident began at approximately 1:05 a.m., when Central East Division officers on patrol saw an Acura sedan travelling at high speed on Simcoe Street North without its lights on, according to police.

Officers tried to stop the sedan, but police said the driver fled. They later found the vehicle empty in a residential driveway.

After searching the neighbourhood, officers found the Acura driver hiding in a backyard and took him into custody. Police said a search of the sedan uncovered drugs and a replica firearm.

According to police, that driver was under conditions prohibiting him from having care or control of a motor vehicle and requiring him to stay at his residence at night.

While officers were continuing that investigation, a Tesla SUV entered the area at high speed, police said. The SUV stopped, and officers attempted to speak with its driver.

Police allege the SUV then attempted to reverse, struck two officers and left the area. The officer with serious injuries was transported to a local hospital, while the second officer attended a local hospital with minor injuries.

Waggan is charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, three counts of failing to comply with a release order, failing to identify himself to an officer and failing to remain.

Police said he was also arrested on outstanding charges connected to a road rage incident in June 2026. He faces two additional counts of assault with a weapon in connection with that incident.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
