A tropical escape a short walk from Clifton Hill
For more than 20 years, Bird Kingdom has offered Niagara Falls visitors a chance to wander through a tropical world of free-flying birds, exotic animals and hands-on encounters — all just steps from the falls themselves.
The attraction, which opened in 2003 inside the former Niagara Falls Museum building on River Road, is home to more than 100 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, according to Niagara Daily News.
Senior Animal Care Supervisor and Trainer Alex Farrow says that while birds remain the heart of the facility, there is something for everyone, from lorikeet feedings and parrot encounters to interactive aviary tours led by the attraction's animal trainers.
From former pets to conservation ambassadors
Beyond the visitor experience, Farrow says education and conservation are major priorities for the facility.
Many of the parrots living at Bird Kingdom were previously kept as pets before being donated to the attraction. Staff use those backstories to teach visitors about the challenges of the exotic pet trade and the importance of protecting vulnerable species in the wild.
Farrow says the team regularly speaks with guests about biodiversity, conservation and the importance of sharing the planet responsibly with wildlife — turning a family outing into a chance to learn about the pressures facing bird populations around the world.
A year-round indoor rainforest
The attraction's interior is designed to feel like a natural tropical setting, with live tropical plants, a large indoor waterfall and close-up encounters with species from around the globe.
Because the experience is indoors, it runs year-round — a draw for families looking for a rainy-day or off-season activity in a tourism city that leans heavily on warm-weather attractions.
Farrow says the goal is to create a relaxing and engaging experience where visitors can connect with animals while learning more about them in a setting that mimics their natural environment.
A downtown neighbour to the falls tourism strip
Bird Kingdom sits a short walk from Clifton Hill, placing it in the heart of the Niagara Falls tourism district and making it an easy add-on for visitors already in the area.
The facility's home in the former Niagara Falls Museum building also ties the attraction to a piece of local history — the building has served the city's visitors in different forms for generations.
For locals, the attraction offers a nearby chance to see species from around the world without leaving the region, and to hear directly from the trainers who care for them.
