The Blue Jays reinstated veteran pitcher Max Scherzer from the 15-day injured list and designated reliever Connor Seabold for assignment, the team announced.

Scherzer is slated to start Wednesday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies, a 7:07 p.m. ET first pitch that will be broadcast on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

Return comes after seven-week absence

The outing will be Scherzer's first on a major-league mound since April 24. He made five starts for Toronto early in the season before landing on the injured list with right forearm tendinitis and inflammation in his left ankle.

Those early starts were a struggle for the 41-year-old right-hander, who posted a 9.64 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP before being shut down.

Scherzer tuned up for his return with a pair of rehabilitation starts with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, including an outing last Friday in which he struck out five batters over 3.2 innings.

Seabold loses roster spot

To make room on the roster, Toronto designated Connor Seabold for assignment. The right-handed reliever had been re-acquired from the Detroit Tigers on May 27.

Seabold appeared in 16 games with the Blue Jays, pitching to a 4.26 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP across 19 innings, with 15 strikeouts.

Milestone within reach

Wednesday's start carries added significance for Scherzer, who sits one strikeout away from becoming just the 11th pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,500 career strikeouts.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner's first chance at the milestone will come in front of a home crowd as the Blue Jays close out their series against the Phillies.
