Brampton families can turn favourite meals into a shared learning activity this month, with Brampton Library planning a community recipe display and food-themed storytimes to mark Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27.
According to a Brampton Library announcement, recipe cards will be available at all branches beginning Jan. 15, while themed storytimes will run at seven branches from Jan. 26 to 29.
Family Literacy Day is held each year on Jan. 27 to highlight the importance of reading and taking part in other literacy activities together. This year’s theme focuses on using mealtimes for family learning, with cooking and family history as starting points.
The library’s storytimes will feature books about food from around the world, along with ways families can share cultural knowledge. The sessions are spread across four days, giving residents several branch locations and times to choose from.
Share a family recipe
For the Recipe Share activity, families are invited to contribute a favourite meal to a community display. Starting Jan. 15, residents can visit any Brampton Library branch to collect a blank recipe card.
Families can fill out the card together and return it to library staff. Completed recipes will be displayed in the branches, allowing residents to share their family’s food traditions with the wider community.
Storytime dates and locations
The first scheduled storytime will take place at Claireville on Jan. 26, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Three branches will host sessions on Family Literacy Day itself, Jan. 27. Cyril Clark’s storytime will run from 6:30 to 7 p.m., while Gore Meadows and Springdale will each hold a session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
On Jan. 28, South Fletcher’s (Shoppers World) will host a storytime from 6 to 7 p.m. Mount Pleasant Village’s session will follow from 7 to 8 p.m.
Chinguacousy will host the final listed session on Jan. 29, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. All times are Eastern.
Residents can also consult the library’s events calendar to find a storytime near them. The announcement points families to ABC Life Literacy for more information about Family Literacy Day and family literacy research.
