A 27-year-old Brampton woman has been arrested and charged in connection with a string of rental fraud incidents in the city that left 17 victims out more than $60,000 combined, according to Peel Regional Police.

Police said Savreet Kaur, of Brampton, was arrested on July 13 and held in custody for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice. She is accused of advertising homes, including basement apartments, for rent on social media platforms.

Investigators with the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau say the alleged fraud took place between May 2025 and February 2026.

How the scheme worked

According to police, victims responded to the rental ads, signed rental agreements and sent deposits covering the first and last month's rent. When they showed up at the properties with their belongings, many of them having already moved out of their previous homes, they found the rentals were not actually available.

Investigators say none of the victims received the accommodations they paid for, and none have had their money returned.

Police have identified 17 incidents so far, with combined financial losses of more than $60,000. The exact charges laid against the accused were not listed in the police release.

Warning to renters

Peel Regional Police are urging people looking for housing to be careful when searching for rentals on social media. Anyone seeking more information on how to protect themselves from fraud can visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's website.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 2233.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say further victims may come forward as the case works its way through the courts.
