Peel Region's push to move more of its services online has earned a national technology award.

The region announced on Jan. 9 that its Digital Peel program is one of the winners of the 2025 CIO Awards Canada, presented by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) and CIO, a publication for technology leaders.

What Digital Peel does

Digital Peel is a multi-year project to give residents a consistent online experience when they deal with the region. Peel says the program helps people quickly find key information about a service, such as who is eligible, what it costs and how to apply, while improving the region's own efficiency.

Services now available on peelregion.ca include vaccine ordering and freedom of information requests, among others. The region says it is also investing in modern applications and cloud-based tools to make services more accessible.

Receiving the CIO Awards Canada honour confirms that Peel Region leads the way in public service tech leadership and innovation.

Among this year's winners

IDC announced the 2025 winners last August. The list also included Durham Region, the Toronto District School Board, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and the Electrical Safety Authority. IDC said the awards recognize Canadian organizations using information technology in innovative ways to deliver value, whether by improving processes, enabling growth or strengthening relationships with customers. Winners were honoured at a ceremony in Toronto on Nov. 13.

Why it matters in Mississauga

Peel Region delivers many day-to-day services to Mississauga households, including waste collection, water and wastewater, public health and paramedic services. The region serves about 1.6 million people and more than 200,000 businesses across Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

The region did not release details on the cost of the program in its announcement.
