One person is dead after a Toronto police officer opened fire near Wilson subway station on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto police said officers were called to the Wilson Avenue and King High Avenue area just before 1:30 p.m. after reports that a vehicle was being driven erratically.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle had been damaged in a crash, police said.

Police say the driver then tried to leave the scene, and an altercation followed between the driver and officers. During that confrontation, an officer fired his gun.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Toronto police. No officers were injured in the incident.

Police have not released the identity of the driver or said how many officers were involved in the confrontation. Toronto police offered no further details about what led to the shooting.

The intersection where the shooting took place sits just north of Highway 401 in North York, steps from Wilson station on the TTC's Line 1 subway. The area was the site of a heavy police presence through the afternoon as investigators worked at the scene.
