Whitby teens riding Durham Region Transit still have a few weeks to get value out of the transit agency's discounted youth pass, with the Y10 monthly program set to run through June 30.
The Y10 pass is aimed at customers between the ages of 13 and 19, offering them unlimited travel on DRT during the school year, according to Durham Region Transit. The program is tied to the academic calendar, with passes active from September 1 to June 30.
The savings come from buying the pass month after month. Customers who purchase a pass every month from September through June save $20.14 on each consecutive Y10 monthly pass, for a total of $201.40 across the 10-month school year, the transit agency said.
The pass is priced at $87.28 per month. To keep unlimited travel in effect, riders must buy a Y10 monthly pass each consecutive month.
How enrolment works
All Y10 customers must complete a Y10 enrolment form to receive the monthly savings, and passes must be purchased in person with proof of age that includes a birth date. DRT notes the Y10 monthly pass is not available through the PRESTO e-ticket app, so riders need to plan ahead and buy at a staffed location.
During the most recent enrolment cycle, sign-up opened on August 1, 2025, with the September pass available for purchase starting August 21, 2025. Customers had to complete enrolment and buy their first pass by September 15, 2025, to take part for the full school year.
Riders who want to take part in a future cycle would follow the same pattern: enrol, buy the September pass before the mid-September deadline, and keep purchasing monthly to hold on to the discount through the following June. DRT has not yet posted details for the next school year on its announcement page.
Why the program exists
DRT says the Y10 pass is designed to make transit more affordable and accessible for young riders in Durham Region, including students commuting to school, part-time jobs and activities across Whitby and neighbouring communities.
For families budgeting for the year ahead, the program's structure means the biggest savings go to riders who commit early and stay enrolled for the full 10 months. Missing a monthly purchase breaks the consecutive chain that drives the discount.
