New permanent school-based employees joining Durham’s Catholic education community were formally welcomed into their roles during the Durham Catholic District School Board’s annual Mass and commissioning celebration in Whitby.

According to the Durham Catholic District School Board, the gathering took place at St. John the Evangelist Parish and brought together clergy, trustees, staff and families.

The annual event marks the start of permanent employees’ service in Catholic education. It combines a Mass with a formal commissioning of staff into their new roles.

Father Francisco presided over the Mass and led those attending in prayer and reflection. The board thanked both him and the parish for their part in hosting the celebration.

During the commissioning, new staff were encouraged to support students’ faith, learning and well-being through their work. The gathering also focused on the shared mission of Catholic education.

The board’s announcement did not specify the date of the celebration, the number of employees commissioned or the schools where they will work.
