The Town of Wasaga Beach has issued a public notification after roughly 170 cubic metres of secondary effluent bypassed disk filters at the town's Water Pollution Control Plant over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The bypass was caused by equipment failures — a torn panel and a failed motor — that operations staff discovered after responding to multiple alarms at the plant, according to a public notification from the Town of Wasaga Beach.

The notice states the bypass took place at Disk Filters #1 and 2 at the Wasaga Beach Water Pollution Control Plant, and occurred in two events: from 11:48 p.m. on October 10 to 12:38 a.m. on October 11, and between 11:31 p.m. and 12:33 p.m. on October 11.

During those events, approximately 170 cubic metres of secondary effluent bypassed the disk filters and overflowed into the UV channel at the plant.

The notification was prepared in accordance with Environmental Compliance Approval 0766-CM9RQA, issued February 16, 2023, which requires the town to notify the public and downstream users who may be affected by an overflow, bypass or spill event at the facility.

Residents with questions or concerns are being directed to the Ontario Clean Water Agency, which operates the plant, at 705-429-2525 during regular office hours, Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The notice was published on the town's website as part of its standard procedure for reporting bypass, overflow and spill events at the Water Pollution Control Plant.
