Farmers market season has arrived in Mississauga, with four weekly markets now open across the city offering fresh produce, baked goods, cheeses and artisan crafts through the fall.

The largest of the bunch, run by the Mississauga Central Lions Club, operates on Celebration Square in front of City Hall at 300 City Centre Dr. That market runs Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., from June 3 to Oct. 25.

Where to find the markets

The Lions Club also runs a second location at 4190 Shipp Dr., in a parking lot adjacent to Shipp Drive. It runs Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., from June 7 to Oct. 29.

In the city's east end, a Sunday market featuring local, sustainable, organic and artisan products operates in the Dixie Road parking lot next to the Small Arms Inspection Building, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. between May 24 and Oct. 25.

In Port Credit, a Saturday market at the Port Credit Library parking lot offers fresh produce, cheese, eggs, baked goods, food and beverages, artisans and live music. It runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 6 to Oct. 10.

Part of the city's climate strategy

According to a City of Mississauga news release, shopping at farmers markets supports local businesses and promotes urban agriculture, which the City describes as the practice of growing, processing, sharing and distributing food within a city.

Urban agriculture is listed as an important part of the City's climate mitigation and adaptation strategy, alongside community gardens, composting and food waste reduction.

City Council approved Mississauga's Urban Agriculture Strategy in 2022. The City says it encourages healthier lifestyles, supports existing growing and harvesting skills in the community, helps residents learn new skills, improves food security and supports local businesses.

The City advises shoppers to come early for the best selection. At the Celebration Square market, paid parking is available in the underground garage beneath City Hall, and the Central Library can be reached from Duke of York Boulevard.
