Four drivers had their licences suspended for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days after being charged with stunt driving during targeted traffic enforcement across Ottawa on Friday evening, Oct. 2.
Ottawa Police Service said its Road Safety Unit and East District Traffic Unit carried out the operation as part of the ongoing #ResidentsMatter initiative, which focuses on unsafe and aggressive driving. Police released the results on Monday, Oct. 5.
Officers issued 31 provincial offence notices for offences that included speeding, unsafe lane changes, distracted driving, licence plate offences, equipment violations and other Highway Traffic Act offences.
Police also issued 11 Part 3 court summons, which require drivers to appear in court. The release did not provide a breakdown of the offences associated with those summons.
The four drivers charged with stunt driving were stopped at different locations in Ottawa. Police did not identify the locations or describe the driving that led to those charges.
Each of those drivers must attend court. According to police, a conviction could bring a fine ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, a further licence suspension of one to three years and a possible six-month jail sentence.
The enforcement initiative also involves monitoring locations where vehicles gather across the city. Police said that work is intended to address unsafe driving, nuisance behaviour and other concerns raised by residents.
Police said officers will continue responding to community concerns and targeting dangerous and unsafe driving.
Residents can submit traffic complaints through ottawapolice.ca/report. Police also make data available through their Community Safety Data portal at data.ottawapolice.ca, where members of the public can view, download and interact with information released by the service.
