Mississauga residents can catch two days of free live music at Celebration Square Amphitheatre when Rock the Coliseum returns July 31 and Aug. 1. The all-ages indie festival will feature My Son the Hurricane and CROW as its headliners.

The Friday, July 31 program will focus on alternative, rock and funk music, with My Son the Hurricane headlining, according to amplifymusicmag.com. Saturday, Aug. 1 will turn to hip hop, with CROW leading the bill.

Produced by CCAI, the festival was founded in 2006 and is billing this summer’s event as its 21st year. The announcement describes Rock the Coliseum as Mississauga’s longest-running free, all-ages indie music festival, with this year’s program highlighting Ontario artists.

A history of showcasing Canadian acts

The festival’s announcement points to a history of presenting Canadian performers before they found wider success. Its past lineup includes artists who have earned Juno nominations or awards, reached radio charts and toured internationally.

Among the Juno-nominated or winning acts named as previous performers are Alysha Brilla, Harm & Ease, Haviah Mighty, Monster Truck, Softcult, MONOWHALES and Sean Pinchin.

The announcement also lists David Boyd Janes and Elyse Saunders among its past radio-charting performers. The Creepshow, The Dreamboats and SUMO CYCO are identified as internationally touring acts that have appeared at the festival.

This year’s two-day format gives listeners separate programs centred on different genres, while keeping both days free and open to all ages. The full festival lineup is available on the Rock the Coliseum website.
