Recreation and Parks Month runs all of June
June is Recreation and Parks Month across Durham Region, and Ajax residents will have a month of free ways to get moving — from public swims to Free Fitness Fridays.
The Durham Region Health Department has partnered with participating municipalities across the region, including Ajax, to offer free recreation programs throughout the month, according to the Region of Durham announcement.
The centerpiece is a passport adventure initiative. Residents can pick up a passport and take part in a variety of free activities at local municipal recreation centres, including public swims, Free Fitness Fridays and a lineup of new activities.
Where available, passport details and event information can be found on participating municipalities' recreation websites or in person at local municipal recreation facilities. The region is also encouraging residents to share their experiences throughout the month using the hashtag #JRPM2026.
June is also Bike Month
June doubles as Bike Month in Durham, which the region is pitching as an ideal time for residents to get active on two wheels.
Cycling events and bike-friendly activities across the region are listed at durham.ca/BikeMonth, Durham Region Health Department said.
"With both Recreation and Parks Month and Bike Month taking place in June, residents have many options to stay active and connected right here in Durham Region," said Tara Wheeler, public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. "There is always something fun to do in June. Everyone is encouraged to get active, explore local recreation opportunities and enjoy the many parks and outdoor spaces available throughout the region."
Wheeler's department is leading the regional promotion of the month-long celebration.
How to take part in Ajax
Residents looking to join in can visit their local municipal recreation centre or their municipal website for event details and participation information, according to the announcement.
In Ajax, that means checking the town's recreation listings as activities roll out over the coming weeks. The programs are free during June as part of the regional initiative.
The region is also reminding residents of the parks and outdoor spaces available close to home, from waterfront trails to neighbourhood greenspaces, as places to stay active on their own schedule.
For more information, area residents can contact the Durham Region Health Department by calling 311 within region limits, 905-668-7711 or toll-free at 1-800-372-1102.
