Riders across Durham Region are facing a stretch of detours and stop closures, with the biggest disruption hitting Pickering, where construction has shut down a section of Glenanna Road and forced eight Durham Region Transit routes off their normal paths.
According to Durham Region Transit, Glenanna Road is closed between The Esplanade South and Pickering Parkway until Monday, Oct. 26. Routes 112, 118, 121, 211, 900B, 916, 917 and 920B are detouring via Valley Farm and Pickering Parkway in the meantime.
The transit agency did not say how long the closure has been in effect beyond the end date, but riders who normally board along Glenanna Road will need to plan for the detour routing through the rest of the month. DRT is advising passengers to check schedules before travelling.
Port Perry stop closed for Walmart construction
Further east, a Port Perry bus stop is temporarily out of service. Stop #3300, located on Highway 7A Westbound at SmartCentres Port Perry, is closed from Tuesday, Oct. 13 until Monday, Oct. 26 due to construction at the Port Perry Walmart.
Passengers who normally use that stop will need to catch their bus elsewhere while the work is underway.
Applefest detours in Bowmanville this weekend
In Clarington, downtown Bowmanville will see its own transit disruption this weekend. Routes 502 and 902 will detour along King Street from Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. until Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., because of the Applefest festival.
The annual festival closes King Street to traffic, and DRT said riders on the two affected routes should expect changes to their regular stops during the detour period.
What riders should know
DRT is encouraging passengers to stay informed while the construction-related changes are in effect. The agency posts service updates on its website and social media channels, and offers an email subscription for the latest news and information.
Riders can also consult the full DRT system map online to see detour routing and alternative stops. Fares can be paid with a PRESTO card, the reloadable smartcard that lets passengers tap on and off.
DRT also operates On Demand service, which uses smaller vehicles and dynamic routing to pick up passengers in areas and at times when scheduled bus routes are not operating. Riders affected by the Port Perry stop closure or weekend Bowmanville detours can check whether On Demand is available in their area.
The Glenanna Road and Port Perry disruptions are both scheduled to wrap up on Oct. 26, with Bowmanville service expected to return to normal Saturday evening.
