Kaylee Hunter's second-half penalty gave AFC Toronto a 1-0 win over Calgary Wild FC at York Lions Stadium on Tuesday night, the club's first home victory of the Northern Super League season.

Hunter converted from the spot in the 50th minute for her fifth goal of the year, moving the 18-year-old striker into a tie for fourth place in the NSL's Golden Boot race.

Goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo made three saves to record her second clean sheet in as many starts since joining the club, keeping Toronto's defensive streak alive after back-to-back shutouts.

The result improves AFC Toronto to 6-3-4 on the season, leaving the club third in the NSL table with 21 points.

Toronto controlled the run of play

AFC Toronto pressed forward through the first half, controlling most of the possession and winning a string of corners without finding a breakthrough.

"I thought we were in total control in the first half," head coach Marko Milanović told the club's match report. "Even though we didn't create a lot of clear-cut chances, I thought we were in their box multiple times, I think close to 10 corners."

"Scored that big goal early and held on," he added of the second half.

Hunter, a Calgary native, said she was relieved to finally see one go in after a string of first-half chances.

"I was just happy to get one in the back of the net," she said. "And then once we got the goal, we didn't really slow down our momentum. It was a big goal. I was happy it went in and it won us the game."

Toronto finished with 21 total shots and four on target, while limiting Calgary's offensive chances. Olivia Chisholm picked up a yellow card in the 77th minute. Lena Silano came off the bench in the 65th minute for her Northern Super League debut.

A special night for D'Angelo

The home debut was a meaningful one for D'Angelo, a Wellford-area product from Welland, Ont., whose family made the trip to Toronto to watch her play professionally in Canada for the first time.

"Being at home is really special. It was an hour and a half for my parents to come and drive and watch me and the team play, and I haven't had that since before I went to college," D'Angelo told AFC Toronto's match report. "I'm so honoured and grateful to have this opportunity and to be a part of this club and to share it with my family. It means the world."

The keeper, who has featured for Canada's national team, credited the players in front of her for the shutout.

It's a shutout, but it's a team shutout. Defensively we were solid again tonight and that's huge.

She also looked ahead to an upcoming move to a bigger stage, telling the club the team is set to play at BMO Field after starting the season at York Lions Stadium, where the squad trains daily.
