One of Mississauga's busiest intersections shuts down in all directions starting tonight as construction on the Hazel McCallion Line moves into its track-laying stage.
Metrolinx will fully close the intersection of Hurontario St. and Dundas St. beginning at 7 p.m. on June 11 to install the centre-running guideway and LRT tracks for the line, according to a City of Mississauga service update.
Two-phase closure
To reduce the disruption, the work has been split into two phases.
During the first phase, from 7 p.m. June 11 to 5 a.m. June 15, the intersection will be completely closed to traffic in every direction.
In the second phase, from 5 a.m. June 15 to 5 a.m. June 26, Hurontario St. will reopen to north–south traffic, but Dundas St. will stay closed to east–west travel at Hurontario St.
MiWay detours
MiWay routes 1 and 101 will remain on detour while the closure is in effect, the service update said.
The city is asking drivers and transit customers to be patient travelling through the area and to follow posted detour signage during the temporary disruption.
MiWay customers can check the latest service updates at miway.ca/updates.
The closure is part of ongoing Hazel McCallion Line construction, which the service update described as well underway. The light-rail project runs along the Hurontario corridor, and the intersection work is needed to build the centre-running guideway and lay the LRT tracks through one of the city's main crossroads.
Motorists who normally use Hurontario or Dundas through the area should expect delays and changed traffic patterns until the intersection fully reopens, and transit riders on the affected routes should leave extra time for their trips.
The closure is scheduled to lift at 5 a.m. on June 26, when both roads are expected to return to normal operation.
