Pedestrians who use Liverpool Road will face rotating sidewalk closures for roughly three months this fall and winter as the City of Pickering carries out road improvements along the busy corridor.

According to a City of Pickering notice, the closures will affect both the east and west sides of Liverpool Road between Pickering Parkway and Bayly Street, beginning Monday, October 19, 2026 and continuing until Monday, January 25, 2027.

The city says access to one side of the sidewalk along Liverpool Road will remain open to the public at all times while the work is underway. Closure and detour signage will be updated on a daily basis so walkers know which side of the street is available.

What residents and commuters should know

The stretch being worked on connects two well-travelled corridors in Pickering, with Pickering Parkway at the north end and Bayly Street at the south. Anyone walking through the area — including commuters heading to nearby transit stops, shoppers and residents — should expect to cross the road and follow posted detour routes during the project.

Because only one side of the sidewalk will be open at any given time, and that side will shift as construction progresses, the city is advising pedestrians to check the signs each day rather than relying on a fixed detour pattern.

The city has published a service announcement with a map showing the affected area, available through the notice on pickering.ca.

Who to contact with questions

Residents with questions about the closures can reach the city's Engineering Services Department. Michael Manion, an inspector with Development Services, can be reached at 905-420-4660, ext. 2124, or by email at mmanion@pickering.ca. Joe Mitschang, a supervisor with Development Services, can be reached at the same main number at ext. 2030 or at jmitschang@pickering.ca.

The work is expected to wrap up by January 25, 2027, weather and scheduling permitting.
