Students from two Markham Catholic schools were singled out by the York Catholic District School Board this month for winning prizes in contests open to students well beyond York Region.
Trustees and the board's senior team recognized the students at the February regular board meeting, the board said in a post on Feb. 26. The board identified the students by first name only.
First prize for a St. Edward student
Alexa, a student at St. Edward Catholic Elementary School in Markham, won first prize in the ShareLife School Poster Contest. The board credited her teacher, Mme. Dagher, with helping her. ShareLife is the annual fundraising appeal of the Archdiocese of Toronto, which supports Catholic charities.
The contest was open to all students in the archdiocese. Second place went to another York Catholic student, Angel, from St. Agnes of Assisi Catholic Elementary School in Woodbridge, giving the board the top two spots.
Provincial honours for a McGivney video
At the secondary level, three students from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham, Zachary, Ismael and Kishan, took second prize in the high school category of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association's Short Video Contest.
That contest was open to students across Ontario. The board said the students were guided by their religion teacher, Alexa Marro, and called the result a testament to their work. The board posted a link to the video so families could watch it.
The board congratulated the students, their families and staff at their schools.
A regular part of board meetings
York Catholic recognizes students and staff for achievements at its regular board meetings. The board serves Catholic elementary and secondary schools across York Region, including several in Markham.
