Markham residents can take in two days of holiday celebrations in Markham Village, with the free Festival of Lights scheduled for Nov. 27 and the annual Santa Claus parade following on Nov. 28.
According to Markham Review, the festival will feature the official Christmas tree lighting, an appearance by Santa, fireworks and live entertainment. The evening event brings together local businesses, community organizations, families and performers in Markham’s historic district.
Two additions to this year’s celebration are the Winter Village Market and Santa’s Village. Visitors will also be able to see a new Community Crochet Holiday Tree created by the Markham Guild of Village Crafts.
Local musicians and performers on the programme
The entertainment lineup includes the Wind Symphony ensemble from Markham District High School and carollers from Unionville Theatre Company, who will move through the festival. NorthFire Circus is scheduled to present two fire shows.
The guild’s new crochet tree follows its Crochet Granny Square Tree from last year. The display adds a community craft project to a programme that also includes music, holiday attractions and fireworks.
The Festival of Lights has been held for more than four decades. Alongside its seasonal entertainment, the celebration provides an occasion to highlight local talent and businesses.
Mary Pan, executive director of the Markham Village BIA and a Markham Village resident, said the event brings neighbours, businesses and community organizations together. In remarks published by Markham Review, she described the celebration as an opportunity to support local businesses, showcase performers and give back to the community.
Parade heads north to Markham Museum
The holiday programme continues the following morning with the Santa Claus parade. It is scheduled to begin at Main Street and Highway 7 at 11 a.m. Eastern on Nov. 28.
The parade will travel north along Main Street to Markham Museum. Community floats, marching bands and entertainers are expected to take part.
