Metrolinx has awarded the major construction contract for Grimsby GO Station, moving the transit agency one step closer to extending GO rail service into the Niagara Region.

According to Metrolinx, the contract went to Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture. The agency announced the award on Oct. 13.

The new station will sit on the Lakeshore West Line, the corridor that carries GO trains from Toronto through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington toward Hamilton. It will be located west of Confederation GO Station, which opened recently.

For residents of Grimsby and surrounding communities, the station is expected to cut travel time significantly. Metrolinx said many local riders currently drive up to 30 minutes to reach the nearest GO station, and the new stop will eliminate much of that trip while easing road congestion.

The project also carries weight beyond Grimsby. Metrolinx describes it as the first station to be built using a new standardized approach, one designed to give customers a safe, functional experience while creating a template that future stations can follow — allowing them to be delivered more quickly and at lower cost.

The award marks the latest milestone in the broader push to expand GO rail across Hamilton and Niagara, a region that has long relied on buses and private vehicles for connections to the Greater Toronto Area. Once complete, Grimsby GO will tighten transit links between Niagara communities and the existing GO network that GTA riders use every day.

Metrolinx has not announced a construction timeline or an opening date for the station. The agency said updates on GO Expansion and construction progress will be shared through its e-newsletter and its Hamilton-Niagara social media accounts.
