A 31-year-old Midland woman is facing an impaired driving charge after police found her slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle stopped at a red light.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP say officers were called to the intersection of King and Yonge streets in Midland at about 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 14, after a member of the public reported that a car sitting at the traffic signal had a driver who appeared unresponsive.

Police located the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who seemed confused and showed signs of impairment, according to officers. After further investigation, police formed grounds to believe the driver was impaired by drugs.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment, where she underwent a drug recognition evaluation.

As a result of the investigation, Cheyanne Lessard, 31, of Midland, has been charged with operation while impaired.

She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Jan. 29.

The charge comes with automatic provincial penalties that begin well before any court date. Under Ontario law, a driver charged with impaired operation faces an immediate 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

Police credited the tip from the public with bringing the incident to their attention. The case remains before the courts, and the charge has not been tested.
