Mississauga is buying a parcel of vacant land in Ward 6 to make room for more MiWay bus garage space.

City council on Wednesday approved a General Committee recommendation authorizing staff to complete the purchase of about 3.91 acres, or 1.58 hectares, of vacant land in Ward 6. A by-law passed the same day identifies the property as 1000 Central Parkway West. The purchase was considered in closed session at General Committee on Feb. 18, and its terms are set out in a confidential staff report.

Council created a new capital project, called MiWay Land Acquisition for Garage Expansion, with a budget of $13.6 million. The money is coming from the city's tax capital reserve fund.

Why it matters for riders

Garage space limits how many buses a transit system can store and maintain, so more room is needed before a fleet can grow and run more frequent service.

MiWay is already adding service. On Monday, Feb. 23, it increased frequency on Dundas Street routes 1 and 101 and extended Route 48 Erin Mills to the University of Toronto Mississauga. The city said the changes were meant to better match customer demand and shifting ridership on one of its busiest corridors.

The city has not said how many buses the expanded garage would hold, what will be built on the site or when construction could start.

The land purchase was approved as part of the General Committee report on council's consent agenda, which passed 11-0.
