Mississauga residents who know a neighbour, volunteer or community leader who goes well beyond the call have until March 29 to put that person forward for the city's Citizen of the Year award.
The City of Mississauga opened nominations on Friday, Feb. 6, for the Gordon S. Shipp Memorial Award for Citizen of the Year. It is the first time the city itself is running the award, which was previously presented by the Cornerstone Association of Realtors and, before that, the former Mississauga Real Estate Board.
A long-running honour changes hands
The award is named for Gordon S. Shipp, a local custom home builder who chaired the board of Shipp Corporation Ltd., and honours his record of service to the community. Council approved moving the award to the city in August 2025. It was last handed out in May 2025 by Cornerstone.
This year's recipient will be honoured at an evening ceremony at Mississauga City Hall later in 2026, as part of the city's annual Civic Recognition evening, which the city expects to hold in the fall.
Who can be nominated
The award is open to Mississauga residents who have given their time and energy without seeking anything in return to make the community better. The city says it is looking for people who show strong leadership, community service and philanthropy, and who inspire others through teamwork, commitment and a positive attitude.
How to nominate someone
Visit the Civic Recognition page on the city's website and review the award criteria.
Email civicrecognition.program@mississauga.ca with a description of the nominee's achievements.
Send the nomination by March 29.
Who decides
A volunteer selection committee will review the nominations. It includes one citizen member from each of the city's wards, a member of the Shipp family and a representative of the Cornerstone Association of Realtors. The committee is to make its recommendation in April, and city council will give final approval.
More details on the award and the Civic Recognition program are posted on the city's website.
