Mississauga's first New Year's baby took only a quarter of an hour to arrive in 2026.

A baby boy named Waris was born at Credit Valley Hospital at 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 1 to first-time parents, according to Trillium Health Partners, which runs the hospital. The hospital network said both the baby and his mother were doing well.

In a brief message shared through the hospital, the family said the care team was "amazing" and that they "couldn't have been in better hands," insauga reported. The parents' names were not released.

Where Mississauga's babies are born now

Waris arrived at a hospital that has recently become the centre of birthing care for Trillium Health Partners. Since Oct. 8, 2025, the hospital network has provided all inpatient care for women's health, birthing patients and children at Credit Valley Hospital, which means all babies born at Trillium are now delivered there.

The move is temporary. Trillium says those services will stay at Credit Valley until construction is finished on the future Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.

Other Peel families celebrating

Waris was one of several babies born across the Greater Toronto Area in the first minutes of the year, and a number of the families were from Peel Region.

At William Osler Health System's Brampton Civic Hospital, Brampton couple Jasveer Kaur and Jaswinder Singh Dhaliwal met their son at exactly midnight, CP24 reported. The boy weighed six pounds, 12 ounces.

Two other Brampton couples welcomed New Year's babies outside Peel. Parents Stephanie and Brydon welcomed a son, James, at 12:01 a.m. at Mackenzie Health's Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, while Manveer Sidhu and Dharminder Singh Swagh welcomed a boy at 12:28 a.m. at Etobicoke General Hospital, according to CP24.
