A stage show that has marked Lunar New Year in Vaughan and Toronto in past years is coming to Mississauga for the first time. The 2026 Mississauga Lunar New Year Spectacular takes place at Meadowvale Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 21, four days after the start of the Year of the Horse.
The show is hosted by the Horizon and Legacy Foundation and directed by Alice Zhang, who has worked as an actress and television producer in China. "This year is the first year it has been held in Mississauga," Zhang told INsauga.com.
More than 25 acts
The program blends traditional and contemporary performance, with dance, festive music and cultural presentations drawn from Lunar New Year customs. More than 25 groups from across the Greater Toronto Area are taking part, with performers ranging in age from about six to 70.
Things open with a lion dance, which Zhang said will invite the audience to take part rather than simply watch. Because this is the Year of the Horse, she built the evening around ideas of energy, progress, confidence and vitality.
One of the larger segments runs about 10 minutes and brings 43 performers together, mixing traditional dance with movements from kung fu and tai chi. Another piece, called Horse Racing, is built around traditional Chinese string instruments.
Before the show, an activity zone will offer zodiac readings and calligraphy at booths outside the performance area.
A welcome to all residents
The city's event listing says the performance will be presented in English and Chinese, and describes the show as a celebration of renewal, unity and prosperity that is meant for audiences of all ages. The event is organized by an outside group and is not a City of Mississauga production.
Zhang said she hopes residents across the city will come out to enjoy the performances and share in the holiday.
