A Mississauga man is among two people charged in a human trafficking investigation involving allegations that a female victim was sexually exploited across the Greater Toronto Area, Peel Regional Police said.

Marcos Ariel Marinoni, 42, of Mississauga, and Carlos Gutierrez, 30, of Toronto, remain in custody. Police say the investigation is ongoing and believe there may be other victims who have not come forward.

Officers carried out four search warrants in Mississauga and the Collingwood area as part of the investigation. The police account does not specify how many searches took place in each location.

Peel’s Vice and Human Trafficking Unit launched the investigation, called Project Mermaid, in November 2025 after allegations that the victim was being trafficked and sexually exploited throughout the GTA.

Investigators allege the two accused used intimidation, manipulation and threats of violence to control the victim and profited financially from her exploitation.

Police further allege that one of the accused communicated with the victim and the other accused using an unauthorized cellphone while serving a lengthy sentence in a Correctional Service of Canada institution.

According to police, both men are associated with MS-13, the street gang also known as Mara Salvatrucha.

The Ontario Provincial Police and the Correctional Service of Canada assisted Peel investigators with the case.

As investigators seek information about possible additional victims, anyone with information about the investigation can contact Peel’s Vice and Human Trafficking Unit at 905-453-2121, ext. 3555.
