Forty students from 27 Mississauga high schools helped their classmates learn to ride MiWay during the 2025–2026 school year, earning more than 700 volunteer hours through the transit service’s Student Ambassador Program.
The City of Mississauga announced the program’s winners at its General Committee meeting on May 20, recognizing students who promoted public transit within their school communities.
The ambassadors showed fellow students how to use PRESTO, plan a transit trip and travel safely on MiWay, the City of Mississauga said. The program gives high school students a role in helping their peers understand how to get around the city by bus.
Students sign up each year to represent their schools. During the program, they take part in activities that earn them points and volunteer hours while encouraging classmates to try transit.
According to the city, learning those skills can help students feel more comfortable travelling with friends and classmates. The city also describes the program as a way to build independence and practical skills students can use when travelling to college, university, a co-op placement or work.
Summer rides and next year’s program
The city also highlighted another transit initiative for young people: the Sauga Summer Pass. Youth ages 12 to 16 will be able to ride MiWay for free with the pass from June 26 through September 7, 2026.
The summer pass is a separate initiative from the school ambassador program. It offers young people a way to use transit to reach summer activities with friends.
Mississauga high school students interested in becoming ambassadors for the 2026–2027 program can apply when applications open this fall. Information about taking part is available on the MiWay Student Ambassador webpage.
