The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra is joining forces with Quartetto Gelato, one of Canada's best-known chamber ensembles, for a concert that hops from country to country. Travels the World takes the stage at the Living Arts Centre on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m., the orchestra announced this week.
A program that spans the globe
The evening moves from Brazilian rhythms to traditional tunes from the United Kingdom, French romance and Argentine tango. Along the way, the program touches on klezmer from Israel, classical pieces with a German accent, works by Canadian composer Charles Cozens, American popular music, Serbian folk music, and favourites from Austria and Hungary. The orchestra says every stop on the route will showcase the virtuosity and flair the quartet is known for.
Quartetto Gelato is known for blending styles and for its easy rapport with audiences. The group was named Debut Artist of the Year by NPR's Performance Today, has played sold-out shows around the world and has been heard often on CBC, NPR, PBS and Classical 96.3 FM. The orchestra says the ensemble's concerts are as much about connecting with listeners as about technical skill, and aim to make classical music approachable and memorable.
Quartetto Gelato has a unique ability to connect audiences through music that crosses styles and cultures.
— Denis Mastromonaco, artistic director, Mississauga Symphony Orchestra
Mastromonaco added that the ensemble's artistry and warmth reflect the spirit of the orchestra, and that the MSO is pleased to share the program with its community.
