The City of Niagara Falls and its Environmental Action Committee are calling on residents to join two community-wide events this October: the Community Curbside Giveaway and the Fall Community Clean Up.
According to a City of Niagara Falls media release, both initiatives offer simple ways for people to reduce waste, care for the environment and help keep the city clean.
Curbside Giveaway runs rain or shine
During the Community Curbside Giveaway, residents can place gently used items in good condition at the curb between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., rain or shine, for neighbours and other community members to pick up for free.
The city says the event is an easy way to give household items a second life, keep useful materials out of the landfill and help others find something they need.
A list of acceptable items, along with additional tips and information, is available on the city's website at niagarafalls.ca/curbside.
Clean up begins at MacBain Community Centre
Later in the day, volunteers are invited to roll up their sleeves for the Fall Community Clean Up, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants will meet at the MacBain Community Centre at 7150 Montrose Road before heading out to collect litter and debris from municipal parks, trails and boulevards across the community.
The city says families, friends, workplaces and community groups are all encouraged to take part. Students can also use the event to earn community service hours while helping keep Niagara Falls clean.
About the Environmental Action Committee
The Environmental Action Committee is a volunteer committee appointed by Niagara Falls City Council. Its mandate includes encouraging environmental responsibility, promoting city-wide beautification, supporting active transportation and fostering civic pride through community action.
Residents who want more information can contact Beth Angle, senior manager of recreation and museums with the City of Niagara Falls, at bangle@niagarafalls.ca or 905-356-7521.
Whether giving unwanted items a new home or cleaning up a neighbourhood, the city says residents can make a difference this October by taking part in one or both events.
