Niagara residents will have a new community-led Neighbourhood Watch program aimed at helping neighbours look out for one another and report concerns to police.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is launching the initiative across the region, Niagara Daily News reported. Officials describe its focus as awareness, prevention and responsible information sharing.
Police are drawing a clear distinction between neighbourhood involvement and enforcement. According to the service, the program is not about residents enforcing the law.
Instead, the initiative centres on residents paying attention to their communities, looking out for each other and bringing concerns to authorities. Police say crimes should always be reported directly to authorities, rather than shared only on social media.
That distinction is central to the program’s approach to information sharing: posting about a crime online does not replace reporting it to police.
The service’s CORE Unit will provide guidance, resources and support to organized Neighbourhood Watch groups across Niagara, according to police.
While residents will lead the community effort, the unit’s role will be to support those groups. The initiative combines that police support with a focus on prevention and neighbour-to-neighbour awareness, rather than enforcement by participants.
