Mississauga residents can now nominate the cyclists, businesses and students who make it easier to get around the city on two wheels.
Nominations are open for four awards presented each year by the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC), according to a City of Mississauga news release. The deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, January 8, 2027, at 11:59 p.m.
The awards recognize people, businesses and students who help make cycling safer, more accessible and more welcoming while encouraging active transportation in the community. Winners will be announced and recognized at a City Council meeting in spring 2027.
The four awards
The Phil Green Recognition Award goes to a person or group that has made a strong effort to promote or enhance cycling or other forms of sustainable transportation in Mississauga throughout 2026. The award honours the late Phil Green, a Mississauga resident and founding MCAC member who worked to promote safe cycling in the city.
The Cycling Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Recognition Award is presented to a person or people who have demonstrated equity, diversity and inclusion while promoting cycling or other sustainable transportation. The release cites examples such as creating programs and initiatives that improve access to resources or events for marginalized and other underrepresented communities in Mississauga, including people with disabilities and low-income households.
The Business Recognition Award recognizes a business or business owner who has promoted cycling to employees or customers by breaking down barriers to cycling — for example, by providing safe bicycle parking or offering discounts for cyclists.
The Youth/School Cycling Recognition Award goes to a student or group of students who promoted cycling to their peers or actively set an example for safe cycling in Mississauga.
How to nominate
To nominate a person or group, residents must submit a written recommendation to MCAC explaining why the nominee deserves the award. Self-nominations are permitted.
Nomination forms can be downloaded through the city's website and emailed to cycling@mississauga.ca. MCAC will review the nominations and select the winners.
"Know a cyclist or a cycling group in your community who has championed cycling or other active ways to move around the city? Nominate them for one of four awards today!" the City of Mississauga news release said.
Nominees must meet eligibility criteria for the award they are nominated for. More information about cycling in Mississauga is available at mississauga.ca/cycling.
