The northbound Don Valley Parkway will be fully closed overnight as crews demolish a fire-damaged building steps away from the expressway.

According to a City of Toronto news release, the northbound lanes shut down as of 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, and are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Friday, October 16, in time for the morning commute. The closure is expected to last less than 12 hours.

The shutdown begins at the eastbound Gardiner Expressway at Jarvis Street, with northbound access resuming at Dundas Street. The Don Roadway, Eastern Avenue and Queen Street ramps will also stay closed while the demolition is underway.

The work follows a fire the night before at 2 Matilda St., a building Toronto Fire Services says was extensively damaged. Fire Chief Jim Jessop has authorized the demolition in the interest of public safety.

The structure sits roughly 30 feet from the DVP, which prompted the full closure while crews carry out what the City describes as a complex demolition using specialized equipment.

Drivers who rely on the northbound DVP to get home Thursday evening or to work Friday morning will need to find alternate routes. The City says the expressway will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.

Toronto Fire Services continues to oversee the site as the demolition proceeds. The City has not said whether any charges or further investigations related to the fire are ongoing.
