Markham is getting a marquee international motorsport event. Green Savoree Toronto ULC, the City of Markham and INDYCAR announced Sept. 3 that the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy will race on a new temporary street circuit in Markham Centre from Aug. 14-16, 2026, under a multiyear agreement.
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES event, which has run on the streets of Toronto since 1986 apart from 2008, 2020 and 2021, will now make its home on a 12-turn, 3.52-kilometre layout in the eastern part of Markham's downtown, bounded by Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO rail corridor and Highway 407.
A track built for Markham's core
The circuit was designed by Tony Cotman of NZR Consulting, a veteran track designer. The temporary layout includes a double-sided pit lane, long straightaways and sections meant to test drivers technically. According to the announcement, the city has already begun early works on the track and festival site in co-ordination with Metrolinx and other area partners.
Organizers say the race weekend is expected to draw more than 140,000 attendees and generate tens of millions of dollars in economic activity through sport tourism, hospitality and event services. They describe it as the largest sports and cultural celebration in York Region's history.
We are excited to welcome the exhilarating experience of INDYCAR SERIES racing hitting our streets in 2026,
"We are proud to welcome this world-class event to our community," Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti continued in the announcement. He thanked Green Savoree Toronto, Penske Entertainment Corp., the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, the Ontario Honda Dealers Association and the Province of Ontario, adding that Markham is "ready to build on its strong sports legacy."
Praise from INDYCAR, the province
Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles called Markham a growing, diverse and dynamic city that "will provide a terrific showcase for our exhilarating wheel-to-wheel racing," and thanked Scarpitti and Green Savoree Toronto president Jeff Atkinson for their roles in the partnership.
"It is crucial for INDYCAR to continue to reach our fans in Canada, and we simply cannot wait for this new chapter to begin next year," Miles said.
Ontario Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden said the Indy "has been a cornerstone of Ontario's events calendar for nearly forty years" and that sport tourism is a major economic driver for the province.
"We are announcing today a multi-year agreement with the City of Markham to be the new home of this Ontario motorsports tradition," said Atkinson, president of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. "We look forward to welcoming all our fans, the drivers and race teams out to this terrific new venue in Markham Centre next August."
A homecoming for Hinchcliffe
The move carries personal meaning for one of racing's best-known Canadian names. Indianapolis 500 pole winner and FOX Sports INDYCAR commentator James Hinchcliffe was born in Markham.
"Markham was my first home and where my racing dreams took root," Hinchcliffe said. "Ontario has some incredibly passionate open-wheel racing fans, and I can't wait to see them lining the streets for an epic event."
The announcement points to the venue's regional access, citing two nearby 400-series highways, Unionville GO Station and the VIVA Rapid Transit system as connections expected to bring fans from across Southern Ontario.
Ongoing event updates and ticket pricing will be posted at hondaindy.com when available.
