The board chair of Ontario Power Generation has taken on a new role with one of the world's best-known fusion energy startups, according to a General Fusion news release.
Wendy Kei, who leads the board of Ontario's Crown-owned electricity producer, joined Vancouver-based General Fusion as a strategic advisor, the company announced in February. Her mandate includes helping the firm prepare to become a publicly traded company, advising its audit committee, and overseeing financial reporting.
Kei brings more than 30 years of public company finance and governance experience spanning a range of industries, including energy, the announcement said.
The move comes at a significant moment for the fusion company. General Fusion said in January 2026 that it plans to go public through a business combination with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, a special purpose acquisition company traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker SVAC.
General Fusion is redefining what's possible in the pursuit of commercial fusion energy and has firmly established itself as a leader in the global effort to bring this technology to life
Kei said in the company announcement, adding that she looked forward to working with a company whose "practical, cost-focused approach is engineered to overcome the traditional barriers to commercialization."
General Fusion CEO Greg Twinney praised the appointment in the same release.
Wendy brings a unique combination of board leadership, governance expertise, and financial acumen
Twinney said, noting that her experience executing complex transactions would be valuable as the company works toward commercialization.
A deep résumé in corporate governance
Beyond her role at OPG, Kei chairs the audit committee at Centerra Gold and sits on the board of the Institute of Corporate Directors. She previously served as chief financial officer of Dominion Diamond Corporation, formerly Harry Winston Diamond Corporation, and has chaired numerous public company boards and committees, including audit and governance committees.
She is a Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant and a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, and holds a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo. Her recognitions include a BMO Celebrate Women on Boards Lifetime Achievement honour in 2025, a Women Corporate Directors Visionary Award in 2024, and a spot among Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2020.
For Ontario readers, the appointment links the province's electricity sector to the emerging fusion industry. OPG, which Kei chairs, operates most of Ontario's generating fleet, dominated by nuclear power, while General Fusion is pursuing a technology that could one day compete with conventional nuclear generation.
General Fusion was founded in 2002 and is funded by a global syndicate of energy venture capital firms, industry leaders and technology investors, according to the company.
Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, its prospective merger partner, is part of a family of investment vehicles focused on energy and decarbonization. Over the past five years, the Spring Valley family has raised $690 million US across three initial public offerings, including one involving NuScale Power, a U.S. small modular reactor company.
The company cautioned that the proposed business combination remains subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearances, and that there is no guarantee it will be completed.
