Durham police are seeking witnesses and video footage after a shooting at a Clarington plaza led to the arrest of a 29-year-old Oshawa man. No injuries were reported, Durham Regional Police Service said.

East Division officers responded to a report of an armed person near King Street East and Townline Road South at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026.

According to police, several callers reported a large altercation at the plaza. Police allege one person involved then pulled out a firearm and fired toward another person.

Officers found multiple shell casings when they arrived. During a search of the surrounding area, they located several people believed to have been involved in the incident.

Police said those individuals ran when officers approached them. One suspect was arrested after a short foot chase.

Ashtoney Thompson, 29, of Oshawa, is charged with possessing a firearm without a licence, two counts of possessing a firearm while prohibited, possessing a prohibited device, possessing a loaded firearm and discharging a firearm with intent.

He also faces charges of breaching probation and failing to comply with a release order. Police said he was subject to conditions prohibiting him from possessing weapons at the time of his arrest.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
