Ottawa students in a culinary co-op program are preparing more than 200 meals each week for families, seniors and children in the Caldwell community while earning high school credits and industry-recognized certifications.
The Skilled Meals Culinary Co-op Program brings together the Ottawa Catholic School Board, Skills Council Canada and the Caldwell Family Centre, according to an Ottawa Catholic School Board update published May 13.
The partnership combines training in a professional kitchen with meal preparation for local residents. Students work alongside experienced mentors, gaining practical experience while contributing to a community food service.
The board says the meals students prepare are nutritious and distributed within the Caldwell community. Their work also extends beyond those weekly meals: students provide catering for meetings and events and assist with the daily lunch service at the board’s central office.
Kitchen experience with school credit
Students enrolled in Skilled Meals gain experience in a professional culinary setting while working toward both school credits and certifications recognized by industry. The board’s update does not identify the specific certifications.
The program gives participants an opportunity to explore careers in culinary arts, hospitality and skilled trades. Mentorship is part of that experience, with students learning alongside people who have worked in the field.
Along with culinary training, the board says the co-op helps students develop teamwork, confidence, responsibility and skills they can use in future employment. It describes the setting as a supportive environment in which students can discover their interests and strengths.
Learning through community service
Community service is a central part of the program. Students prepare food that will be served to other people, connecting their kitchen work with the needs of residents in the Caldwell community.
The board says that connection helps students understand how their skills can benefit others and can build pride, empathy and a sense of purpose. It presents the program as a way to combine career exploration with contributions to the community.
The May 13 update also points to the program for students interested in summer participation or the 2026–2027 school year. It does not provide application instructions, enrolment deadlines or eligibility requirements.
