Mississauga residents ready to part with their real Christmas trees will soon be able to put them out at the curb.

Peel Region announced on Jan. 6 that curbside collection of real Christmas trees and wreaths begins next week. The region, which collects garbage, organics and yard waste in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, says residents should check their waste collection calendar to find their pickup day.

How to prepare your tree

The region asks residents to prepare their trees as follows:

  • Trees taller than three metres, or 10 feet, must be cut in half.

  • Remove all plastic bags, ornaments, tinsel, nails, wire and tree stands.

  • Do not place trees in, on or behind snowbanks.

People living in apartments and condominiums should contact their property manager to ask how trees are handled in their building.

Missed your pickup?

Residents who miss their scheduled collection day can take their tree to one of Peel's Community Recycling Centres until Jan. 30. The same rules apply there: trees over three metres must be cut in half, and all decorations, bags, nails, wires and stands must be removed before drop-off.

A seasonal part of Peel's waste system

The region serves about 1.6 million residents and more than 200,000 businesses across Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. The tree program covers real trees and wreaths only.

Residents with questions about other items can check Peel's waste collection calendar or contact the region.
