Peel Regional Police say two Brampton residents are facing charges after a man who arranged a date online was allegedly threatened and extorted out of $6,000, and investigators believe there may be more victims.

The investigation is being handled by the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau and centres on a meeting arranged through a messaging platform, Peel Regional Police said in a news release.

What police say happened

According to investigators, the victim was contacted in July by someone using the name Manisha Sharma on a messaging platform. The two agreed to meet in person in August.

The victim then went to a residential basement apartment near Torbram Road and Peter Robertson Boulevard in Brampton. Shortly after arriving, a male suspect entered the room, and the victim was allegedly threatened and forced to hand over $6,000 by e-transfer, police said.

Two suspects charged

The investigation identified the suspects as Harwinder Singh, 35, of Brampton, and Riya Riya, 23, also of Brampton.

Both were arrested and charged on Aug. 12. In addition to the charges laid against both accused, police say Singh was also charged with uttering threats.

The two were held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice.

Police appeal for other victims

Investigators believe others may have been targeted in similar circumstances and are urging anyone who experienced a comparable incident under the pretext of a casual date to come forward.
