York Regional Police are searching for a driver who they say struck a 19-year-old woman in east Markham on Thursday afternoon and kept going with her on the hood of the car.
The collision happened shortly after 3:40 p.m. on Feb. 19 near Denison Street and Featherstone Avenue, east of McCowan Road. Police say the woman had just gotten off a bus and was crossing northbound when she was hit by a vehicle that ran a red light.
According to police, the driver carried her on the hood for about 50 metres. The car then headed east on Denison Street toward Middlefield Road in a dangerous manner, crossing into oncoming traffic at the intersection to get around a red light.
They would have known that they had struck somebody as they carried her for quite some time.
— Const. Lisa Moskaluk, York Regional Police
The woman was taken to a trauma centre with injuries police described as life-altering. On Friday morning she remained in critical but stable condition.
