A 30-year-old Port Colborne man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Port Colborne on the evening of Oct. 8 that left a 31-year-old Niagara Falls man dead, Niagara Regional Police said.
Police have identified the accused as Tyler Haas, 30, of Port Colborne. He was arrested at the scene on Fares Street shortly after officers responded to the report of a shooting.
The victim's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Police said only that he was a 31-year-old man from Niagara Falls.
Uniformed officers from the NRPS 6 District, which covers Port Colborne and Wainfleet, were called to a Fares Street address north of Rodney Street at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, according to police.
Officers arrived alongside Niagara Emergency Medical Services and found a man suffering from an injury consistent with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died of his injury.
The scene was secured with help from the Emergency Task Unit, and a 30-year-old Port Colborne man was arrested at the scene without a search for additional suspects. Detectives from the Homicide Unit have since taken carriage of the investigation.
Detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the victim and accused were known to each other. There are no outstanding suspects, and police say there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
The circumstances and motive behind the shooting remain under active investigation, according to the Niagara Regional Police Service.
As of Friday, the Fares Street scene was still being held so that the Forensic Services Unit could process it. Police have not said how long the scene will remain closed.
