Scarecrows with a purpose
Scarecrows across Welland will do double duty this month, collecting food donations for local food banks as the second annual Sharecrows Food Drive returns to the city from October 20 to 31. According to a City of Welland news release, residents, businesses, schools and community groups are all invited to take part by building and registering a scarecrow display, then placing a donation bin beside it for visitors to drop off non-perishable food and personal hygiene items. Registered displays will be plotted on an interactive Sharecrows Tour Map, so people can wander the city, take in the creations and leave donations at their favourites along the way.
No scarecrow required
Organizers stress that you don't have to build a display to participate. Community members can simply use the online map to visit registered Sharecrows and contribute food or hygiene items at the displays they like best. The drive is organized by the City's Community Support Team, a volunteer group of City of Welland staff. Donations collected during the two-week event will go to local food banks, and the initiative offers residents an early chance to give ahead of the annual Welland Food Drive on November 7.
