Niagara residents who have always dreamed of calling a game will get their chance this summer, as Sport Niagara and Slo-Pitch Ontario recruit volunteer play-by-play announcers and colour commentators for the 2026 Slo-Pitch National Championships.
The championships bring some of Canada's top slo-pitch athletes to the region in August 2026, and organizers are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support event broadcasts throughout the week, according to The Niagara Independent.
The two organizations say the roles are open to aspiring broadcasters, passionate sports fans, communications students, or anyone who loves telling the story of sport.
What volunteer announcers will do
Volunteers will provide play-by-play commentary during championship games, assist with athlete and team storytelling, and help create an engaging experience for spectators and online viewers.
Organizers say participants will gain experience in sports broadcasting and event production while contributing to Team Niagara's effort to showcase the community on a national stage.
Training, support and event orientation will be provided, so no prior broadcasting experience is required.
Who can apply
Sport Niagara and Slo-Pitch Ontario are looking for energetic individuals with a passion for sport and storytelling who are comfortable speaking in front of an audience or on a broadcast.
Volunteers should be able to work collaboratively with event staff and fellow volunteers, and want to contribute to what the organizations describe as one of Canada's premier amateur sporting events.
A busy summer of slo-pitch in Niagara
The championship is part of a full summer of slo-pitch in the region. Events coming to Niagara include the 2026 Men's and Women's Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships and the 2026 Ontario Play Slo-Pitch Provincial Championships.
Tournament weekends are scheduled for Aug. 28 to 30, Sept. 11 to 13, and Sept. 18 to 20.
Organizers expect thousands of athletes, coaches, families and fans to tune in throughout the event, and say volunteer voices could help capture the excitement, celebrate athletes and create lasting memories from the championships.
Anyone interested in joining the broadcast team can contact Tom Buchan, chief executive officer of the Slo-Pitch Ontario Association, at tbuchan@slopitch.org.
