Sullivan Avenue has been closed to through traffic between Towpath Street and Front Street in downtown Thorold, and the City expects the closure to last approximately three weeks.
The closure took effect Friday, October 2, according to a City of Thorold notice. A city contractor is using the shutdown to replace aging underground infrastructure and reconstruct the roadway in the downtown core.
What's affected
As work advances along Sullivan Avenue, the closure will affect on-street parking as well as access to one entrance of Parking Lot 1 and the Thorold Community Credit Union parking lot, the City said.
Both lots will stay open to drivers through their alternate entrances, and detour signage will be posted to guide traffic around the work zone.
The contractor will maintain traffic flow where possible and keep existing sidewalks open for as long as possible, the notice said.
Other Thorold closures
The Sullivan Avenue work is one of several temporary closures the City has announced this fall.
Hydro One closed a section of Barron Road from Glover Road to Polloway Road on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to carry out hydro maintenance in the area, according to the City's website.
Crompton Boulevard, meanwhile, has been closed to through traffic from Richmond Street to the south end of the street since September 9. Bolton Avenue remains open through the Crompton Boulevard intersection, and Richmond Street and Queen Street are also still open.
Looking further ahead, the City has listed an Allanburg Bridge 11 closure scheduled to run from October 13 to November 11.
