Whitby residents planning around the Thanksgiving long weekend will see holiday closures and a one-day shift in waste collection on Monday, October 12, according to a Town of Whitby notice.
The biggest day-to-day change is at the curb. There will be no waste collection services on Thanksgiving Monday, so garbage, green bin and blue box material should be put out one day later than usual for the rest of that week.
Residents unsure of their regular pickup day can check the Town's waste collection calendar or download the Whitby Waste Buddy app. Details are available on the Town's waste page.
Library hours over the long weekend
All Whitby Public Library locations will be open on Saturday, October 10, but closed on Sunday, October 11 and Thanksgiving Monday, October 12.
Book returns will remain open at the branches over the holiday weekend, so items can still be dropped off while the buildings are closed. Digital content, including e-books and other online materials, is available around the clock at WhitbyLibrary.ca.
Fall yard waste takes priority
The Town also cautioned that booking availability at municipal facilities is limited until November 1, as crews turn to seasonal priorities including fall leaf and yard waste collection. New booking dates are expected to open again in early December.
Anyone hoping to use a Town facility or amenity over the coming weeks is encouraged to plan ahead with that reduced availability in mind.
October is also election season
With the municipal election approaching, the Town is reminding residents they can check whether they are on the Voters' List, learn about candidates and find out where to vote at whitby.ca/VOTE.
Whether the weekend is for a family dinner, a fall walk or catching up on chores, Whitby residents will want to adjust their routines slightly for the holiday — setting bins out a day late and planning library visits for Saturday rather than Sunday or Monday.
The full list of holiday hours for Town amenities and services is available through the Town of Whitby notice announcing the Thanksgiving schedule.
