As the Family Day long weekend wraps up and Lunar New Year arrives on Tuesday, Feb. 17, the coming week in Markham builds toward a busy Saturday of Year of the Horse celebrations. Tuesday: pancakes for Shrove Tuesday

Grace Church Markham holds its Mardi Gras Pancake Supper from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 to $15, children five and under eat free, and a family rate is $50. Anyone looking to build an online profile can join a free Markham Public Library session, From Zero to Viral, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday to Sunday: Matilda on stage

Unionville Theatre Company stages Matilda The Musical at Flato Markham Theatre from Feb. 19 to 22, with a cast of local performers telling the story of Matilda Wormwood through song and dance. Tickets are $30 to $35, and show times vary by day.

Also Thursday, Kate's Garden runs a Tulipmania workshop on styling fresh and potted tulips from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at $30 with an arrangement to take home. Parents can join a free online library workshop on managing anxiety in children from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Friday: après-ski and tarot

The Unionville Arms Pub and Grill hosts a winter party, Après Ski 2, from 8 p.m. with a DJ and ski and snowboard gear giveaways. On Main Street, Eight On Main Boutique offers 30-minute tarot readings from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for $40.

Saturday: Lunar New Year across the city

  • CF Markville, 2 p.m., free: an eye-dotting ceremony to awaken the lion and dragon, dance performances and the God of Fortune handing out red envelopes

  • Markham Museum, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: crafts, calligraphy and mahjong; listed as sold out

  • Xinflix Media, doors at 1 p.m., free: a community celebration with MPP Logan Kanapathi, with performances, food and drinks

  • Varley Art Gallery, Feb. 21 and 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free: LunarFest GTA workshops and performances, with a Lunar Lanterns exhibition running to March 20

  • Pacific Mall, Feb. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Feb. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m., free: an opening ceremony and door-to-door lion dances

  • Studio 28, 6 to 11:30 p.m., $48: a Chinese New Year party with a lucky meal, open mic and singing contest

Also Saturday, Markham Village Library hosts Heritage in Motion, in which Hakka-Jamaican storyteller Jephina shares stories of dual heritage and Black history, from 11 a.m. to noon. Author and set designer Camellia Koo reads to children at the Milliken Mills branch from 1 to 2 p.m. Both are free. The Hot As Heck comedy show at Rouge River Brewing Company is sold out.

Sunday and Monday

Older adults can drop in to the Plain Tea and Murukku Social at the Aaniin library branch from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday for tea, snacks, cards, Ludo and carrom. Rouge River Brewery holds an open jam from 2 to 5 p.m. On Monday, Mount Joy Sports Dome hosts Dinks 'n' Donuts, a social pickleball session from 9 to 11 a.m. for $10.
