After a weekend of heavy snow, Markham's calendar picks back up as January winds down. Here is a selection of what is on from Thursday, Jan. 29, through Sunday, Feb. 1.

Thursday: paint a prairie snowscape

Paint Nite runs a guided session called Prairie Snowscape at Rouge River Brewery, 50 Bullock Dr., on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. An instructor leads participants step by step over about two hours, and the canvas, paint, brushes and apron are included. The event is for adults 19 and older, and tickets are $45 plus taxes and fees.

Thursday: trivia and painting in Unionville

Crock A Doodle's Unionville studio hosts The Upside Down Trivia and Paint Night on Jan. 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., pairing pottery painting with themed trivia. Tickets are $20.

Saturday: Tamil Heritage Month at Aaniin

January is Tamil Heritage Month in Canada, and Markham Public Library is marking it with a free family celebration at the Aaniin Community Centre and Library, 5665 14th Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 31. The program runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the community centre, with library activities ending at 5 p.m.

The library says the afternoon will include traditional dance performances, speeches, art and free food to try. The event will be delivered in English and Tamil, and all are welcome.

All weekend: snowshoeing at Markham Museum

Markham Museum staff fit visitors with snowshoes to explore the 25-acre grounds at 9350 Markham Rd. and look for animal tracks along the way. Snowshoeing depends on the weather, so check availability before heading out. Winter boots and cold-weather clothing are required, and final entry is at 4 p.m.

Planning ahead

A Caribbean Carnival Dinner and Dance is set for Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Patrick's Parish, 5633 Highway 7, with a buffet, cash bar, live band and door prizes. Tickets are $55, and proceeds support Catholic Women's League charities.
